I could have told this story but I am humbled to realize that I could not have written it.

I was born in the area that this book has beginnings. This was difficult to read not because of editing or errors but because I could smell the air, see rows and rows of cotton, shotgun shacks as I read about Tallulah and Rebi etc.

As I read I shared what I was reading with a friend and was hesitant to go on but I could not stop. The sharecroppers, the joints off the beaten path, the migration to cities remind me of people I know. The people that are incredulous and unwilling to believe are people (much like my nieces and nephews) that are uninformed and never will be considering the school systems are working very hard to have slavery and post slavery deleted from school books.

If the chaos of baby momas, who's cousin to who, who went to jail or was killed on the way seems confusing and hard to keep track of, that means you can't imagine living in Louisiana not so very long ago; nor will you remember the restrooms for 'coloreds' or the part of the cafe designated for 'coloreds'.

I think the outraged should not be indignant but rather, cognizant. We walk on the backs of those before us.

This book was a labor of love for Ms. Robinson, and it shows. The story of her family plays out painfully through the pages as numerous tragedies and heartaches befall them. Because the story starts during Civil War times and continues to the present, I lost track of the players about two-thirds of the way in. Nonetheless, it didn't diminish the story being told. I'd say the best way to approach this book is to hear it as if you were seated with your grandmother listening to her tell it. Although there are some issues with editing, structure, punctuation, and point of view, the end result is a rich, compelling story, and an engrossing read.

Review for Rubies and Other Gems by Joyce DeBacco

     I literally traveled back in time while reading this book. Lillian Manning is a 40 year old housewife. Her two children are at the age where they think they have all the answers, as my grandmother used to say, "They're smelling themselves."
      Her husband does not realize how frustrated and neglected she feels, or does he simply not care?       Lily wonders if she would be happier in a simpler era. One where kids did what was expected of them, go to school, obey your parents and do your chores. Boys were required to achieve higher education then find a respectable job. Girls needed to snag a husband and raise a family of her own.       Technology was non-existent.
      The only thing a woman expected out of the bedroom was conception, she wouldn't dare think of, much less, ask for carnal gratification.
      The phrase, "Be careful what you ask for," comes to mind when Lillian falls asleep one day and wakes up to discover that she is still in the home that her grandmother left her, only time has been turned back, way back.
     When she walks into the kitchen it is occupied by a woman and a young girl. She soon comes to realize that this young girl who is complaining about the chores that she has to complete before she can do anything fun, was actually her namesake and grandmother.
     No one can see Lily because this is a dream.
     Being the history buff that she is, Lily is impressed with how accurate the details of her dream arm. The kitchen reflected a period in time when they had water pumps outside the back door instead of running water and plumbing.
    She had always been curious as to how people made out without all the creature comforts that we take for granted. How did people manage without refrigerators, cell phones, the internet and electric can openers? Did they really use outhouses?
     Lily steps out the back door and the paved streets are now dirt roads without automobile traffic. In touring the town she can stand next to someone and observe them all she wanted without their knowledge, after all this was a dream.
     She is taken aback when an attractive man comments on her attire, (or lack thereof). Her shorts are totally inappropriate during this day and age, when women didn't even show their ankles.
    "You can see me?" she asked.
     The town smithy Daniel assures her that he can most definitely see her, and he likes what he is looking at. To his thinking, any woman that dressed like that, wanted to be seen.
    Why could no one else see her? Yet this muscular, handsome man was engaging her in conversation. Who cared he was fine as wine, and she was going to have some fun and flirt. 
    Daniel invites Lily to take a ride on his horse. What harm could come of it? After all this is a dream.

I loved this book, it was full of historical tidbits and spoke on the deterioration that can come along with development. It made me laugh, was suspenseful and made me want to keep reading as Lily kept getting herself into difficult situations.
I cried right along with her. The writing was on point and makes me want to polish my own craft. I will be putting Joyce DeBacco's novels on automatic buy at  Amazon and recommend you do the same.

I am off to see ride along, I know it is going to be good with Kevin Hart and Ice Cube Going to the movie grill theatre. I am going to eat a nice pizza and have a couple of their hurricanes will let you know how it was.

I AM STILL HERE AND STILL STANDING

As you can see I have not been doing my blog it's due diligence, but I am back and going to be blogging at least once a week, hope that you can join me on my new adventures. Since I last blogged I had a really bad bout with my thyroid which I am happy to say, I do not have anymore. All the weight that came with this struggle is melting away. I had gotten up to a whopping 280 lbs. and have lost 69 so far. Another 70 and watch out world. I went home to California august on a book tour and must say that I was a little more than disappointed with the outcome. I sold 30 books the whole week that I was there, 14 at an event that I had organized with 3 other authors at a Compton library. I am happy to say I filled the room to capacity with about 70 people by going on the classmates.com site. The other venue was at the Los Angeles Convention Center. I was really surprised to find that I was one of the key authors in attendance. There were many authors, all trying to sell to one another as there were very few attendee's. I spent 200 hundred dollars on a table, paid $700 on plane tickets for my son and myself... well you can see where I am going with this, all to sell one book. ONE BOOK. My husband words rang in my ears, as he paid $400 dollars for a case of 50 books he had told me, "If this does not work, I am not putting anymore money into your expensive hobby. You are going to have to do something to help bring some money in this house. We have been dealing with this book stuff since 1993 and I can't keep throwing good money after a bad project." I went home and took my spanking in the form of, "I told you so's and decided to get a job. I did that, my daughter was working on a job and had been asking me to apply because she would get a referral for my having successfully finished the season. I not only got the job but when the enrollment season was over for the health insurance related company, they actually kept me for an extra month and I did quite well. When the season was over my supervisor tried to get me on permanent but as his own job was in jeopardy he finally had to give me my end of assignment. I was not bitter because I felt like God had put me in a position to find out if 1. My health would hold up. 2. That I could maintain and be dependable for 3 months. 3. Put me back out in the world, which I had not been in for 5 years due to my thyroid. I never knew when I would be flopping around like a fish out of water, due to the seizures that came along with graves disease. Not to mention that I could not go more than two hours without having to take a nap, could not drive a car or go anywhere without my husband or children along to watch for the signs of me having an episode. 4. And most important, he put me in a call center where I was around 1500 people daily. Talk about a great place to sell my books! I had people coming to my desk everyday purchasing books. (Funny story) One day a girl was at my desk and was purchasing a book and my supervisor walked up and asked, "Can I see that?" The girl handed him the book and he took it and turned it upside down and fanned the pages and shook the book. Of course I asked, "What in the world are you doing?" His response was, "I wanted to see if you were putting crack or something in these books, the way they are selling. These people seem desperate to purchase your books." I told him, "No drugs just the words and the message that the books deliver." I sold 3 cases of print books in as many months. I was home and in my element! I could not wait to get to work everyday to see what I would write. They also started a book club there where during my lunch break we meet in the cafeteria and discuss my books. 5. I was also able to write and work on my craft for about 5 hours a day in between calls and during the disclaimer that I had to play to the enrollees. As you can imagine, I was not disappointed when I got my end of assignment because he said they would be calling me back in March to start a new season. Meanwhile I was researching call center jobs in my area and was pleased to find more than a few with even more employees. If I could get a job at the new block long building that a popular company is building I could clean up. I was making about half of my salary in book sales on the previous job. I was just let go on January 7th, but I knew that I had to jump into action fast. On the way home from the job that last day I noticed a hiring sign on the building which is still under construction, but they are doing classes not from the old job. I went home and with my husbands help applied. I heard back the next day through a phone call that I was going through the next phase of the pre-employment process. The next day (Yesterday), I was sent an email with the assessment test, (common sense questions) and a data entry and typing test. I know I did well. So I am waiting to see what happens next. I also opened my email today and was blasted with an advertisement for a new company called www.BookBaby.com, it is a spin off of C. D. Baby which I know about because I have a lot family including my son who have rap songs that they upload there. I checked my Amazon ebook sales and The Roux in the Gumbo has sold 4 books so far this month. I did an advertisement on Apex for The Kings of Credit, a book about credit laundering, which happens to written by myself and my uncle Willie Bruce Jr. based on his life. www.WilliebruceJr.com I can't wait to see what it does for sales. I am going to update my website since I have not done that since before Obama was elected and I made it red, white and blue. I have four books that I have to work on the final drafts and get an edit, (can't afford to spend a lot on that, so I am researching for someone who can give me a good price, if that is you contact me.)Anyway I am going to dedicate this time off work to finishing, "Street Life to Housewife Part 2, G-Mama The Introduction, and my new book that I just started entitled, "You Are Not The Father!" Anita Hackley-Lambert is the former President/CEO of a fifteen years old information technology and engineering services firm and currently founder of Hackley-Lambert Enterprises, Inc., an emerging portfolio of business opportunities, including HLE Publishing from which she has launched her new writing career.

Anita Hackley-Lambert has envisioned a career in writing ever since the age of twelve, when she wrote her first unpublished book, No Where to Run, a compelling story of sexual assaults she suffered beginning at age five. How did you get into writing?

Actually, I wrote my first unpublished book when I was twelve. After seven years of sexual abuse, it was my way to stay connected to the real world. Those were painful years. It is a miracle I survived“ but that is a story for another book

After getting through a painful youth, I started my own information technology and engineering service company where I began writing technical documents and how-to manuals for the federal government.

When did you first know that you were a writer?

I just knew. After a near death experience in 1989, I started having dreams and vision and was prompted to write them down. After a few years, I realized I had material for several books. Then I began keeping detailed notes and writing. In retrospect, that was perhaps my first major step toward writing about things meaningful to me.

What prompted you to write “F.H.M. Murray: First Biography of a Forgotten Pioneer for Civil Justice?

I was inspired by a promise I made to my mother, who kept the memory of my great grandfather alive. Mother who was blinded by glaucoma, had a secret box packed with Grandpa Murray's papers. She gave me the seeds for my research and had me promise to write her grandfather's story.

F.H.M. Murray (public audience title) did so much for so many. He died in 1951 and was completely forgotten. In all he did he only wanted to be remembered in some small way.

I prepared my first draft and was later diagnosed with stage-three breast cancer. I continued my research and put the writing on hold. I refused radiation and chemo and turned to the Lord. Today, I am cancer free. I credit my strong faith in God who healed me so I could busy myself with research, validate family stories, and write the book.

How long did the book take to write?

Seems like a long time, due to the 10 years of research. However, once I settled down and began to write, it took only three months. I credit this quick push to finish to a 2005 Niagara Movement event I attended in West Virginia. I was encouraged to complete my book in time for the Centennial Commemoration of the Niagara Movement in 2006. I leaped at the opportunity. I knew this could bring maximum exposure to my great grandfather -- a founding member of the movement -- and exposure to my book.

Like my great grandfather, I wanted to self publish my book. I used a professional book editor and award-winning author for that. He was super and worked one-on-one with me and returned my manuscript in record-breaking time. Next, I had the manuscript reviewed by a professional proofreader.

What was unique about working on your book?

How I was able to show the true connection and relationship between Grandpa Murray and W.E.B. Du Bois. I was able to prove his loyalty and friendship to Du Bosi, and show how he got the shaft by Du Bois who used their friendship in self serving way to promote Du Bois own ambitions.

I learned that my great grandfather was uniquely amazing“ full of energy, a visionary, and a pioneer civil rights activist. It was difficult to understand how he had been overlooked. Further investigation revealed a possible clue F.H. M Murray was brutally honest, a no nonsense type of guy. He sought out the truth and used his newspaper business to speak out against the injustice of blacks by both white and black Americans. In the end, his stiffed neck approach seemed to have separated him from those who had once admired him.

What did you learn most?

I learned to connect to myself. It was a unique and beneficial experience for me. From the research through my grandpa's diaries I connected to myself“ actually learned that I was more like him“ explaining why I differed from my siblings.

By working closely with my editor and publishers, I learned a lot about writing and publishing. The insight taught me to appreciate the efforts of writers and of publishers, and taught me how to reduce mistakes in my next book. Another important lesson was to work my manuscripts to completion so that they can go through at least 3 edits and 3 proof readings.

Whats next?

Watch for my upcoming announcement of my new book entitled, Barry A. Murray: Biography in a New Dimension. This is an exciting story about one of this nations most radical newspaper publishers serving the District of Columbia. The twist is that Barry walked in the footsteps of F.H.M. Murray, the great grandfather he never knew. Barry was my cousin. I believe you will love it! I actually have 2 other books I hope to publish this year. After that, I can get down to writing and publishing my other twelve works-in-progress that include such genres as autobiographical, biographical, inspirational, true supernatural encounters, suspense, and fiction.
